Is it really possible to reverse the signs of aging? As we get older, gravity naturally pulls our facial features down. At the same time, we lose skin elasticity, causing loose skin and visible wrinkles along with other issues. At Luminary Plastic Surgery, we help patients look and feel refreshed by lifting the skin and soft tissues of the face. Dr. Ryan Couvillion is an experienced Houston, TX, plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures for the breasts, body, face, and skin.
Also known as rhytidectomy, a facelift reshapes the lower half of the face and tightens loose and hanging skin. Dr. Couvillion can perform a facelift to help his patients accomplish their goal of looking younger. Before scheduling this surgery, it’s important to know whether you are a candidate and what to expect from facelift surgery. Learn more by reading below or scheduling a private consultation with Dr. Couvillion today.
The most ideal candidates
People don’t choose facelift surgery to look stretched-out or pulled, they generally want to look better for their age. When sagging skin gets in the way of feeling confident about your appearance, rhytidectomy might be right for you. Since not everyone is a good fit for facelift surgery, Dr. Couvillion will perform an assessment of your problem areas and thoroughly review your medical history to determine if you are a candidate. Getting cosmetic surgery is an important decision and one that should be made after getting detailed information about what to expect.
A facelift addresses the mid-to-lower face, such as the cheeks, jawline, and neck. In general, facelifts help patients with:
- Deep facial wrinkles and folds
- A sagging jawline or prominent jowls
- A sagging neck or double chin
- Sunken cheeks
Is a facelift right for you?
There is no right age for getting a facelift, but most individuals who choose to have this procedure are in their 40s – 60s, with other healthy patients reaching into their 70s. It should be noted that there are some issues that a facelift will not address. For instance, if you have sustained sun damage due to UV exposure, a facelift may not be the answer. Other areas that are not addressed are fine lines around the mouth, uneven pigmentation, dark spots, and freckles on the face and neck.
A facelift also does not treat the upper face, such as the eyes or eyebrow area. However, a facelift can be combined with additional treatments to correct the upper part of the face, giving patients total facial rejuvenation. These include a brow lift, eyelid surgery, chemical peel, or BOTOX® and dermal fillers to make the outcome even more dramatic. Dr. Couvillion will discuss these different techniques during your consultation.
Surgical technique and recovery
During your consultation, Dr. Couvillion will review the areas that need to be addressed as well as what to expect during facelift surgery and recovery. Rhytidectomy is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation, with incisions made in the hairline above the ears, in front of the ears, and behind the ears. Once the face and neck are sufficiently tightened and placed in a natural position, Dr. Couvillion will place a temporary drainage tube to decrease swelling. We will then monitor you while you stay overnight in the hospital. The following morning, the drainage tube is removed and a responsible friend or family member may drive you home.
Dr. Couvillion will schedule follow-up appointments so he can continue to monitor your progress and make sure you are healing properly. You may experience soreness and swelling that can be reduced with prescription medication. Some patients may have some bruising. Generally, you will feel better within the first week, but it’s best to take about two weeks off from work and social activities. If you have any concerns during the healing process or if you have any additional questions, feel free to contact the staff at Luminary Plastic Surgery in Houston, TX.
Rejuvenate your face
At Luminary Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ryan Couvillion will take into consideration your desired outcome, skin laxity, and other factors when choosing the right facelift method and technique for you. With the wide variety of options available, the best way to determine the right one for you is with a consultation.
